Make everything ducky.

Julie: Tell us about the ducks in your logo. Why are those important to you?

Jane: A friend of mine from college was working in a public relations firm in Manhattan. He did logo work, and I just asked him to come up with a design. That’s what he came up with, sort of the momma duck looking after the little ducks behind her.

Gerry: It’s been fun because we’re able to make everything ducky. Whether it’s the Ducky Bucks we give our employees or the Duck Bunch, the name of one of our programs, it’s fun being able to throw the ducks into all sorts of stuff.

Julie: I still have my duck hat that you gave me, and I love wearing it.

Gerry: We have a duck mascot costume, which is fun. Both males and females have worn the costume. They’ve been able to meet other mascots around the state, like the local baseball team’s.

Julie: I think that’s an important thing to pay attention to. You want something that makes you different so you can get those press releases, so you can get some attention to your child care program.

Jane: I know one thing that was important in choosing the name and logo—I didn’t want something that looked silly and childish. That was sort of what many of the day care centers around were doing, or funky spelling of words. I really wanted to try to start out with a more professional image.

Gerry: It’s really a traditional symbol with the mother and the ducks following, like, “Make way for ducklings.” We were just in Boston and took a picture of something in a park there with a mother duck followed by all the baby ducks, just as cute as you can imagine. It certainly reflects the caring and maternal aspects of child care.

Julie: Absolutely. I’ve seen that in action with the ducks, when the mom won’t leave the pond or land until all the ducklings are in and safe with her. They are spectacular to watch. I think in Boston there’s a statute too, isn’t there?

Jane: Yes.

Julie: What else makes you different? When you think about this entity you’ve created and what really sets you apart, what are some of those things?
